A Word From Mackenzie
“I never initially thought that Interior Design was going to be the career for me – in fact, it never even crossed my mind. When I was younger, I became fascinated by Harry Potter. I had all the books, and all the memorabilia you could ever imagine. There was one book which I was enthralled by. It explored how the books were turned into the films and I became particularly interested in the set design, designed by the late Stephenie McMillan. It was at this point that I thought it was the TV and Film industry that I wanted to get into.
I went to college, studying four subjects, one being Media. Having never done anything like that at school, I surprisingly excelled at it. The time came for me to go to Royal Holloway, to study TV, Film & Digital Production. I was a lover of school, a lover of college, and I was distraught to realise that the conventional University life, just wasn’t for me. I remember one of our projects was to film a WWII inspired piece and I was given the role of the set designer – and it was the first thing that I actually properly enjoyed from my course. It was then that I had an epiphany.
It wasn’t actually videography, or editing that I truly enjoyed – it was doing design work. And in hindsight, thinking back to when I was younger, I was always decorating my childhood bedroom, or changing layouts, or out shopping and buying pieces for my room. I decided that I wanted to do a degree, but in Interior Design.
After some research, I found the ‘National Design Academy’ based in Nottingham. I decided to suspend my time at the beautiful Royal Holloway and progressed onto the National Design Academy. As I hadn’t taken any relevant A Levels to go straight into the degree, I did the Level 3 Diploma in Professional Interior Design, first. I then moved on to the degree, which is studied part time from home. Four years later, I’ve completed my BA degree with a First Class in Interior Design and am now in a career I simply love – and I really can’t ask for more than that.”
